The application process for obtaining a visa to Japan has been made easy by the opening of Japan Visa application center by the Embassy of Japan. It is operated by VFS Global. The site, which has been in effect from April 2012, provides answers to all queries regarding the application of a Visa to Japan.

The Embassy of Japan can only help prospective visitors who are from the area that are under their current jurisdiction in certain locations. The VFS Global provides the residents of areas under the jurisdiction of The Embassy of Japan, New Delhi to drop off their applications at the offices situated in Chandigarh and Jalandhar, and collection centers at Amritsar, Agra, Ludhiana, Dehradun, Guwahati and Jaipur. However, they will continue to accept applications from Official and Diplomatic passport holders.

Visa waiver instructions:
Japan has a withstanding policy of exemption of visa in cases of applicants from certain countries having certain limits of stay, provided that they don’t get compensated for any work they did. Currently 66 countries of the world hold this arrangement with Japan, and before you opt to apply, you need to see if your profile matches with that arrangement or not.

  • For a visit extending up to 6 months: Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, Ireland, UK, Mexico and Switzerland.
  • For a visit extending up to 90 days: Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, USA, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Bahamas, Chile, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Suriname, Guatemala, Honduras, Barbados, Uruguay, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Finland, Denmark, Greece, Italy, France, Iceland, Malta, Macedonia, Luxembourg, Norway, Romania, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, San Marino, Sweden, Spain, Andorra, Estonia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Monaco, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Lesotho, Israel, Tunisia, Mauritius.
  • For a visit of 14 days or less:
  • Highly recommended: Malaysia, Peru.

Duration and types of Visa:

  1. Student visa: Normally the students receive a visa of 1 year, but that is subject to extension as per the demand of the course, and is generally sanctioned.
  2. Temporary visitor visa: For tourism purposes, this type of Visa is usually granted for about 3 months, beyond which it is the decision of the Immigration department of Japan to extend or terminate it.
  3. Employment visa: Itis granted for 3 years and includes intra company transfer visa.
  4. Multiple entry visa: These Visas have a validity of 1 to 5 years and can be utilized on any number of occasions during the validity. These are usually sanctioned to business travellers and the like.
  5. Double entry visa: These are valid up to 4 months.

Additional information:
Visas, student or otherwise, cannot be obtained after entering Japan, and one must possess a valid passport and relevant visa documentation on a visit to Japan. A person with a student visa is not allowed to work in this country.

If a person is in essence granted by the authorities in Japan to stay for 6 months, they are initially granted 3 months on completion of which they need to approach the Immigration authorities about the remaining extension.

Visa application process:
Visa application is a six step operation, which the applicant needs to follow diligently to have an easy convenience towards getting a visa, that takes about 3 days to process, and the application has to be received within 1330 hours to be considered for submission on the working day.

  • Step 2. Procure photographs of yourself.
  • Step 3. Ensure completion of application form and checklist.
  • Step 4. Prepare supporting documents.
  • Step 5. Ensure submission of application at Japan Visa application center.
  • Step 6. Collect passport.
