Amritsar or Ramdaspur as it was called during the British rule is beautiful city situated in the north-western part of India. 9:00 AM: We will pick you from your hotel after breakfast. Morning is set for a visit to the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib). Built in the 16th century, the Golden Temple is a popular Sikh Gurdwara.
The temple has a community kitchen that feeds more than 10,000 people daily. The Sikhs believe in the principle of equality and practice of eating together. You can participate in food preparation activity and later get to taste the Langar (food served as offering). It is very interesting to know that the temple has been serving food to the people from many years, all for free.
11.00 AM: Next halt will be at the Jallianwala Bagh (Garden). Today the bagh is a popular public garden that houses a memorial of national importance. The bagh once witnessed massacre of Indians including men, women and children by the British forces. It was later established in 1951 to commemorate the massacre.
Next you will be visiting the famous Durgiana Temple, situated outside Lohgarh Gate that looks similar to the Golden Temple. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga.
12:30 PM: Your lunch today is planned at a local family’s house. You can also try your hands in the kitchen to prepare the food.
2:00 PM: We will drive towards Wagah Border for the popular evening beating retreat ceremony. Wagah border is popular for the ceremonial closing of gates and lowering of flags of India and Pakistan.
It is a beautiful scene when you see the soldiers return to the border line for the final handshake and afterwards no glance is exchanged and the gates are close.
In the evening we will drop you back to your hotel in Amritsar.
