There must have been multiple reasons behind making Delhi the national capital. This is one of the oldest inhabited cities in India that are known for its age-old cultural history that has been proliferating in the city since 1000 BC. In its 3000 years of history, the people of Delhi have seen the building, ravaging, re-building and complete transformation of this city. The procedures of constant building and re-building were being done following the ideas of empires and world orders.
The un-mitigated development rate in this city has always been considered as the consequence of this city’s history. The Mauryans, Tomara, Chauhans, Mughals and the Slave dynasties and later on, the British contributed to the development of the city into a big metropolis. Every Emperor and his empire made enhancement to the social mores and also to the mosaic of cultural heritage in its architectural palette. As a result of cultural influx, the city received a large group of magnificent structures including a host of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO.
In the present days, this city has been broadly divided into two major parts viz. New Delhi and Old Delhi. Apart from the historic quarter, Old Delhi also includes the walled city confined inside the Red Fort. This part of the city, the capital of Old Mughal Empire was called Shahjahanabad. This part of the city was named after the fifth great emperor of the Mughal Dynasty, Shah Jahan.
New Delhi is often called Luytens Delhi. This part of the city was built purposefully to create the capital of modern India under the British rules. The urbanization of this part of the city literally got started after 1911, when the capital city was moved to Delhi from Kolkata. Being the very heart of this huge democracy called India; this city has numerous architectural wonders located in different parts of the city.
Despite the historical wonders that Delhi holds, tourists from all over the world also visit this city in India to follow its rise as a prominent city of polity with a global significance. In the last half of the century, this city has become one among the business hubs of the world.
